NIMHANS team reaches Jharsuguda to examine Gopal mental condition

Jharsuguda: Neuropsychiatrists from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) arrived in Jharsuguda, Odisha, to assess the mental state of dismissed police official Gopal Das, who is accused of killing Health Minister Naba Kihsore Das.

According to sources, a four-member team of experts from the NIMHANS, Bangalore, arrived here on Tuesday to study the accused's mind and map his socio-psychological behavior as an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police.

The Crime Branch of the Odisha Police, which is investigating the sensational murder case, had requested that NIMHANS send its psychiatrists to map Gopal's socio-psychological behavior based on a medical board's recommendation.

The accused's family members had previously claimed that he was suffering from bibolar disorder and was being treated. On January 29, Gopal Das allegedly fired at the Minister in Brajarajnagar, Jharsuguda district. The same evening, Naba Das died of a bullet wound in a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.

Apart from verifying his previous history, the NIMHANS experts will examine Gopal to determine whether he has bipolar disorder or any other psychiatric ailment.

During the investigation, the Crime Branch sleuths reportedly discovered that the ex-police official's bipolar disorder, which was claimed to have been detected in 2014, had relapsed after around eight years, according to the sources.

The NIMHANS team's visit comes just one day after Gopal Das underwent LVA and a psychological evaluation on Monday. According to sources, Dr Asha Srivastava, director of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in New Delhi, performed both Layered Voice Analysis (LVA) and forensic psychological assessment (FPA) on Gopal.

According to sources, psychiatrists understand how to study and analyze a criminal's psychology, and their findings will play a significant role in the investigation.

The tests were carried out by the CFSL team as part of their efforts to assist the Crime Branch in its investigation.

The Crime Branch detectives are also questioning Gopal after remanding him for four more days in the second phase. The accused, on the other hand, has not stated why he committed the crime.
