Locals protest after a patient died as a result of'medical negligence
Baripada: Angry residents blocked traffic on the Udala-Baripada route here on Saturday, claiming medical negligence in the death of a patient at SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack. On the guarantee of the authorities that the grieving family will be compensated in the amount of Rs 5 lakh, the demonstrators lifted the road roadblock.
Previously, there had been uproar after a patient admitted to PRM Medical College hospital here on October 3 became critically ill after a shard of roof fell over his head. On October 4, the patient was transferred to SCB Medical College Hospital, but he died on Saturday, and his body was returned to Baripada, where outraged residents held protests and blocked traffic, demanding compensation.
When Chakradhar Singh of Podaastia village complained of a fever, he was brought to the hospital. When a shard of roof fell on his head and he became critically ill, he was recommended to sleep on the porch due to a lack of beds at the medical college hospital's medicine ward.
On Friday night, he died in the SCB Medical College hospital where he was being treated. His body was taken to Baripada, where his relatives claimed Rs 10 lakh in compensation from the authorities, claiming that their incompetence was to blame for his death.
After Samakhunta Tehsildar Radha Ranjan Das arrived at the scene and announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the bereaved, the agitators withdrew the road barricade.
