Kendrapada: Four days after the firecracker mishap in Kendrapada, Odisha, the death toll has risen to two, with a 28-year-old youth succumbing to burn injuries while receiving treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack late on Monday.

Pintu Khan was identified as the dead.

On November 25, a seriously injured patient named Uday Bhoi died while receiving care at the hospital. Others are currently struggling for their lives in the SCB Burn ICU.

It is worth noting that the Sadar police arrested three members of various puja committees, named as Bulu Mallik, Arakhita Mallik, and Chilu Dash, in connection with the November 26 fire mishap. The defendants were charged under Sections 286, 337, 338, and 109 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and appeared in court.

A lawsuit has also been filed under the Fireworks and Loudspeaker Act-5 and the Explosives Act-3 & 5 for illegally storing explosives and other firecrackers.

Notably, Sadar police took immediate action and filed charges against many other puja committee members. Jayant Mahapatra, the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), stated that many more arrests will be made soon.

"They might face up to ten years in prison or even life in prison." Their carelessness has put countless people's lives in peril. Public Prosecutor Niranjan Bal informed the reporters, "Strict action should be taken against them."
