Balangir: In yet another breakthrough, police in Odisha's Balangir district busted an illegal cough syrup ring and arrested five people on Wednesday.
Balangir SDPO Tophan Bagh told a press conference here that a special team formed to crack down on cough syrup racketeers had seized a van containing large quantities of cough syrup in Taliuda, Chandanbhati area. Police seized 1120 cough syrup bottles, four mobile phones, and Rs 1100 in cash.
Five people were arrested for supplying cough syrup. According to the SDPO, they are Karuna Nayak of Fasada, Satish Sharma of Bileisharda, Yubraj Bhuye of Bargarh, and Niroj Banchhor of Melechhamunda.
He also revealed that Jitu Sa was apprehended in Cherupali, Sonepur district.On Wednesday, the accused appeared in court.
Notably, police have launched 'Mission Cough Syrup' to combat the cough syrup mafia. On March 13, police busted an interstate racket and arrested 35 people. Cough syrup worth Rs 35 lakh was seized, and police have frozen Rs 2 crore in a supplier company's bank account.
The ring, which is said to be the largest in Balangir, is involved in the illegal procurement, transportation, and sale of cough syrup in Balangir and surrounding districts. They were on their way to West Bengal to get cough syrup.
