"Are More People Involved in the Rape-Murder of Kolkata Doctor? Here's What the Top Cop Said."
City Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal said questions about whether more people were involved in the heinous crime can be only after the probe is completed.
The rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College has deeply affected the nation. The Bengal government and police are facing significant pressure to swiftly resolve the case. City Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal stated that the investigation is ongoing. He mentioned that questions about the involvement of more people in the crime can only be answered after the completion of the probe.
Mr. Goyal confirmed the arrest of one accused, Sanjoy Roy, and stated that they are looking into possible connections of other individuals to the incident. He also mentioned the establishment of a helpline for doctors to provide anonymous information if they suspect anyone. The police are in contact with the victim's family and are committed to sharing the progress of the investigation.
Regarding the possible involvement of additional individuals, Mr. Goyal expressed confidence in making further arrests in the next four to five days. He also noted that if the family remains dissatisfied, further actions, as mentioned by higher authorities, will be pursued.
The 32-year-old victim's body was discovered in the seminar hall of the government-run hospital in the West Bengal capital. The initial autopsy report revealed that the victim suffered bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and private parts. Additionally, injuries were found on her left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger, and lips.
Furthermore, it was disclosed that the main accused, Sanjoy Roy, was not a hospital employee but was frequently observed on the campus. Roy worked as a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, a group of contractual staff assisting the police in various capacities. These civic volunteers, who are paid around ₹12,000 per month, do not receive the same benefits as regular police personnel.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has pledged that the Kolkata Police will conclude the investigation by the following Sunday. She has also stated that if they are unable to do so, the case will be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
