Jharsuguda: Deepali Das, the daughter of slain Odisha Minister Naba Kishore Das, filed her nomination for the May 10 by-election to Odisha's Jharsuguda Assembly constituency on Tuesday.

In the presence of a slew of senior party leaders and supporters, the ruling BJD staged a grand procession to the sub-collector's office, where Deepali filed her nomination papers.

Deepali went to the Patneshwari temple before joining the procession to offer prayers and seek the goddess' blessings. Thousands of BJD workers and supporters marched from Manmohan School grounds.

Several senior leaders, including several ministers, accompanied her during the nomination filing.  Senior leaders such as Debi Prasad Mishra, Pratap Jena, Snehangini Chhuria, Rita Sahu, and Sharada Nayak were present, in addition to party observer Prasanna Acharya.

Deepali received the party ticket from BJD president and chief minister Naveen Patnaik on April 15.

It should be noted that both the BJP's Tankadhar Tripathy and the Congress' Tarun Pandey have already filed nomination papers for the by-election.

All three major political parties in the state have fielded candidates in the bypoll, which is likely to be the last before the next assembly elections in Odisha and will set the tone for the 'Big Battle' in 2024.

Deepali has already conducted extensive tours of the Jharsuguda assembly constituency, interacting with people at the grassroots level in addition to holding meetings and other programs.

once a Congress stronghold, became a BJD stronghold after Naba Das defected from the grand old party and joined the ruling party ahead of the 2019 assembly election. Naba Das, a former Congress MLA from Jharsuguda, won the seat on a BJD ticket in 2019 to become a Minister in the government of Naveen Patnaik.

The by-election is being held in the aftermath of Naba Das's alleged murder by a police officer on January 29.

While the deadline for filing nominations is April 20, the papers will be scrutinized on April 21, and the deadline for withdrawing candidature is April 24.Jharsuguda
