Bhubaneswar: On Sunday, October 12, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik celebrated his 76th birthday. He has asked the public to refrain from wishing him at his home, Naveen Niwas.

For the fourth year in a row, there will be no celebration of the chief minister's birthday. Instead, he will travel to Hyderabad to take part in the curtain-raiser event for the state's premier industry-investors gathering, "Make in Odisha," which will take place later this year.

According to a statement made by Naveen, "I am grateful to the people of Odisha for their love, devotion, and blessings."

Naveen typically skips his birthday and begs people not to swarm Naveen Niwas to wish him for one reason or another.

He initially made the choice to forgo celebrating his birthday in memory of the flood victims in 2011.

Two years later, in 2013, the state was hit by Cyclone Phailin, which left 23 people dead and affected around 9 million people. To prevent a repeat of the typhoon that killed 10,000 people in 1999, more than 1 million people were evacuated before it made landfall. Naveen decided not to celebrate his birthday in favour of attending meetings with senior authorities about relief and rehabilitation, focusing on bringing electricity back to the Ganjam district, which was most badly impacted.

Due to the destruction brought on by hurricane Hudhud in 2014, which resulted in three fatalities and hundreds of homeless people in the state, the Chief Minister chose not to celebrate his birthday.

Naveen made the decision to forgo all celebrations in 2016 out of respect for the jawans who lost their lives battling terrorists in Jammu & Kashmir.

He chose not to celebrate his birthday in 2018 due to the enormous harm and suffering brought on by Cyclone Titli and the accompanying flooding in many districts.

He skipped his birthday celebrations in 2019 due to the damage caused by storm Fani, which made landfall on the coast of Odisha close to Puri on May 3, 2019.

Additionally, he had made the decision not to observe the day in 2020, when the first wave of the pandemic hit, and once more in 2021, when the second wave struck the state once more.

On October 16, 1946, in Cuttack, Naveen was born. In 2000, as the state was still getting over the damage inflicted by the 1999 Super Cyclone, he was appointed Chief Minister. After Pawan Chamling and Jyoti Basu, he is the only other Indian chief minister to hold office for five terms in a row. He has served as the state's chief minister for more than twenty years, making him one of the longest-serving chief ministers in the country.
