Sambalpur: On Monday night, two more gates of the Hirakud dam were opened to let extra water out of the reservoir, bringing the total number of gates open to six.
According to sources, the district government informed the residents of the Hirakud, Sambalpur, and Burla areas before opening the gates.
The situation is being closely monitored by the dam authority. If more gates are required, they will be opened gradually to let the extra water out. According to them, there is currently no chance of a flood downstream.
The reservoir's storage capacity is 628.40 feet, but on Monday morning it was one foot above the ground, and by Monday night it had risen to 629.23 feet.
The regional office of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bhubaneswar has issued a warning for heavy rainfall through Thursday due to a low-pressure area that formed on Monday over the northwest and adjacent west-central Bay of Bengal coasts off the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal and is expected to become a well-marked low-pressure area on Tuesday.
From 8:30 am on September 20 through 8:30 am on September 21, very heavy rain has been predicted for nine districts, including Sambalpur, Sonepur, Boudh, Bargarh, Balangir, Angul, Deogarh, Sundargarh, and Jharsuguda.
In the same time frame, a yellow rain warning has also been issued for Cuttack, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Nuapada.
