Dhamnagar Bypoll: Cong MLA Moquim to campaign for party

Bhubaneswar: Beleaguered leader and senior legislator Md Moquim, who was left off the Odisha Congress' list of star campaigners, declared on Saturday that he will work tirelessly to support the party's candidate in the by-election for the Dhamnagar assembly seat in the Bhadrak district.

Moquim, who described himself as a committed Congress worker, said it makes no difference if his name is not on the list of the party's leading campaigners for the byelection on November 3.

The Cuttack-Barabati MLA explained that because not all leaders can be star campaigners and their number is restricted, star campaigners are picked based on prior performance and leaders' experience. He added that he will go Dhamnagar to participate in the campaign.

For the by-election, Baba Harekrushna Sethi has been put forth by Congress.

A Chella Kumar, Rudra Raju, Sarat Pattanayak, Suresh Routray, and Tara Bahinipati are among the 30 top campaigners for the Congress. They are responsible for Odisha.

It should be remembered that Moquim, the former managing director of Metro Builders, together with three other defendants, including Vinod Kumar, a former IAS officer, received a 3-year sentence of hard labour on September 29. By distributing money under the guise of loans intended for the rural poor, the court held them guilty of criminal misconduct, forgery, cheating, and criminal conspiracy. They also obtained financial gain for Metro Builders Pvt Ltd.

Later, the Orissa High Court last week suspended the three-year prison term given to Moquim by a vigilance court in a loan fraud case, which was a significant comfort to him.

Earlier, Moquim Moquim made headlines for his vote for Draupadi Murmu, the NDA's nominee for president, despite the Odisha Congress unit's choice to endorse Yashwant Sinha.
