In the Malkangiri district of Odisha on Saturday, more than 700 active Maoist supporters—including 300 militia members and many from Andhra Pradesh—rendered themselves to the security forces, according to the police.

In the presence of Rajesh Pandit, DIG, South-West Range, Nitesh Wadhwani, Superintendent of Police, Madan Lal, DIG, BSF, Koraput, and Jagdish Dalai, 2 IC, 65 Bn of BSF, they turned themselves in to the police and Border Security Force (BSF) at Andrahal BSF camp.

These Maoist sympathisers used to participate in violent acts, including the murder of civilians and security personnel, in addition to providing supplies to the ultras.

Before turning themselves in, the militias and supporters of Odisha and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh burned naxal effigies and the clothing they were wearing as a sign of their opposition to Maoist ideology in front of a sizable media audience. They also shouted slogans like "Maobadi Murdabad Ama Sarkar Jindabad."

The state government's development programmes and the strategically placed security forces encouraged the peasants to integrate into society. According to the report, a number of development projects, including the building of new roads, bridges, medical facilities, mobile tower installations, projects to supply drinking water and electricity to all the homes in the area, motivated them to integrate and participate in the development process.

50 active Maoist supporters turned themselves up earlier on June 2 in front of the Odisha DGP, Odisha. Similar to this, on June 11, a total of 347 Maoist supporters turned themselves in at the Jantri BSF Camp to Malkangiri police and BSF.

A total of 550 Maoist followers joined the mainstream on August 22 after turning themselves in to Malkangiri police and BSF at the Janbai BSF Camp. According to the release, this has had a significant impact on the neighbourhood and many more people are now considering "Ghar Wapsi" (homecoming) in the future.
