Bhubaneswar: The State Government is preparing to vaccinate pregnant women against Covid-19, and will provide additional training to healthcare personnel, vaccinators, and others involved in the process to counsel recipients about the vaccine's benefits and hazards.

The training programme has been conveyed to the District Collectors, Municipal Commissioners, and Chief District Medical & Public Health Officers by Additional Chief Secretary, Health & Family Welfare, PK Mohapatra.

Mr Mohapatra said, “Yesterday, we received a letter along with a guidance note on Covid vaccination of pregnant women from the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW). The ministry has communicated that an orientation of all States will be conducted shortly on the guidance note,”

Following that, states will train district-level healthcare workers on the guidelines. As a result, officials have been asked to hold off on starting Covid vaccinations of pregnant women until healthcare management and personnel have been trained on the MoHFW standards.

The Union health ministry has decided to authorise vaccination for pregnant women, arguing that the benefits clearly outweigh the risks. The decision was made in response to the National Technical Advisory Group for Immunization's proposal (NTAGI).

The procedures and modalities of Covid-19 vaccination like registration, generation of certificates after vaccination, etc. will remain the same as it is for any beneficiaries above 18 years of age under the National Covid Vaccination Programme, the Ministry said.

A study by the Indian Council for Medical Research had also found that pregnant and postpartum women were more severely affected during the second wave of Covid-19 in the country than the first.

Pregnant women and their family members should exercise Covid appropriate behaviour such as wearing a double mask, practising frequent hand cleanliness, maintaining physical space, and avoiding crowded places to protect themselves and those around them from spreading the coronavirus infection.
