Bhubaneswar: For the past six years, Rajat Kumar Routray, the former Nazir of Jajpur tehsil, has managed to avoid arrest by changing his name, frequently changing his whereabouts, and mobile phone number.

Routray, the primary suspect in many incidents of government funds embezzlement totaling Rs 4.95 crore, finally ran out of luck on Thursday when he was apprehended by an Odisha Vgilance squad. He has been missing since 2016.

Despite this, the Vigilance team had a difficult time finding him in his hideout, a leased house in CDA, Cuttack, where he and his second wife were residing.

The Nazir and his wife barricaded themselves inside the house when the Vigilance team arrived. From the kitchen, the Nazir climbed a dark, tight corridor and concealed beneath the patio. The Vigilance team forced open the door and tracked him down after a thorough search.

Routray is accused of being involved in several cases of irregularities and misuse of government funds totaling Rs 4.95 crore between April 1, 2006 and April 5, 2016, in collusion with other government employees in the Jajpur tehsil, according to a news release from the Vigilance.

A Special Audit Team of the Board of Revenue, Cuttack, performed an audit in this respect in 2016. The Nazir vanished very immediately after the audit began. He had severed all ties with his family and close friends, and he had remained untraceable for years.

In three separate occasions, he has been arrested.

Routray's employment with the state government has already been terminated. Following his arrest, he was taken to court.
