Balasore: A couple in the Balasore district of Odisha is accused of defrauding a number of State Bank of India (SBI) clients of their savings totaling thousands of rupees.

Sources claim that residents of the adjacent villages of Nilagari block, including Kansa, had deposited their hard-earned money with the couple managing the SBI branch's kiosk. According to reports, the pair handled some of the bank's transactions.

When one of the customers, Jayanti Sahu of Durgapur village, wanted to withdraw money from her bank fixed deposit account upon maturity, the issue of missing deposits from the customers' accounts came to light. When the bank staff began the process of closing the account, they discovered that there was no balance and told Jayanti as a result.

She asserted, however, that she had saved Rs. 1 lakh in two instalments at the bank's kiosk and wished to withdraw the funds for her daughter's wedding after the maturity period of a year had passed. As a result, further depositors inquired about their accounts and encountered the same issue.

When they used to go to the bank branch to deposit money, they said that the employees would always point them in the direction of the kiosk. Before the Jayanti case came to light, they did not discover anything unusual about it. Additionally, they said that despite their approach to the bank's branch manager, he did not offer to assist them.

The bank manager acknowledged that some customers' deposits were missing when he was contacted and stated that they were investigating the situation.

The couple that ran the kiosk is currently gone, and the locals planned to report their missing deposits from the SBI kiosk to the police.
