Koraput: While the prohibition on overnight stays at Deomali hill without a permission was disappointing, there is something to smile about for tourists visiting the highest peak in Odisha's Koraput district.

The district administration in Koraput intends to launch commercial paragliding in the Chandragiri-Pottangi subrange of the Eastern Ghats in early December of this year. Since April, according to sources, trials in various weather circumstances have been undertaken under the supervision of Himachal Pradesh pilots.

The district administration has granted permission to two organisations, one from Bhubaneswar and the other from Himachal Pradesh, to conduct commercial paragliding sessions in Deomali. Anyone over the age of 16 can paraglide with no prior experience.

This is part of a campaign to increase tourism to Deomali while also encouraging adventure sports.

Aside from that, the district administration is working on a Rs 5 crore project that includes five cottages, a large dining hall, two dormitory rooms, landscaping, and pine tree cultivation.

"All-weather cement fibre boards are used to build cottages." Once the project is completed, travellers will be able to spend the night in Deomali. We expect it will be a popular tourist destination. "At least 1,000 pine trees have been planted at Deomali to give green cover," Uma Mahesh, assistant conservator of forests in Koraput, was reported in the media as saying.

The tourism department has also approved Rs 16 crore for the integrated development of Deomali, including the construction of a new entrance gate and parking space.
