Baripada: A 37-year-old man was sentenced to 12 years of solitary confinement by a Special POCSO Court for raping a little girl in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha more than five years ago.

Gurucharan Behera of Deulasahi under Baripada Town Police Station was found guilty on Thursday by judge Sumita Jena of the POCSO court in this city, and she also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000.

On March 31, 2017, the incident happened inside Shri Jagannath Temple in Baripada.

In addition, the District Legal Services Authority was ordered by the court to reimburse the rape victim Rs 4 lakh, according to special public prosecutor A K Pattnaik.

According to Patnaik, the prisoner lured the 10-year-old child inside the temple grounds at around 9 o'clock on the incidental night by offering her chocolates.

He was taken into custody after Baripada Town Police filed a POCSO Act charge against him.

The special public prosecutor was quoted by PTI as adding that the sentence was rendered based on the medical report, the underage girl's statements, and the testimonies of 24 witnesses.
